During the WWII the Dutch used to trick German infiltrators by making them say "Scheveningen" - because it looks like it's easy for a German to pronounce correctly but in fact is pronounced quite differently in Dutch. I'm pretty sure 's Gravenhage would also do the trick, but I guess it would less easy to slip anywhere as the full name is not really used in spoken language. Just some fun facts for lovers of languages (yes, I'm a language geek, even if my languages are limited to Finnish, Dutch, very rusty German and a smattering of Italian/French/Latin/Swedish...).Justine Thttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13080619935561422449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4271373189216022547.post-37286791403463212132013-12-17T14:17:24.941-08:002013-12-17T14:17:24.941-08:00Me and my German studies will happily try to prono...Me and my German studies will happily try to pronounce that and probably fail just enough to make it obvious I'm a multilingual American. ;) Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. I wish Grimm had the budget to film on location, but there's a lot of It's Only A Model and/or Portland/sound stages standing in for, oh, everywhere.

This was a definite improvement over earlier this season! I really hope they figure out how to balance the European conspiracy elements with everyday Grimming elements soon, though.Anna Hammetthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10095633218958433882noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4271373189216022547.post-33778556233497449862013-12-17T14:09:57.106-08:002013-12-17T14:09:57.106-08:00That's one theory! I really, really hope you're right, though I have a sinking feeling this is writer error. I mean, new papers would make SENSE for oh so many reasons, although frankly I feel like the lack of figuring out his European connection could be as simple as standard US-centric worldview. Everyone thinks they're (their country is) the center of the world, after all.

But yes, we'd love to see that cleared up, too.Anna Hammetthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10095633218958433882noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4271373189216022547.post-56327527350240208302013-12-17T14:07:28.525-08:002013-12-17T14:07:28.525-08:00I think these are all very true and valid statemen...I think these are all very true and valid statements, and I definitely think the setup - particularly with the dichotomy in the most recent pair of eps - sprang from Renard's beatdown earlier this season. It's just kind of hammer to the forebrain levels of blatant, at this point.

Yep! We covered that scene in, um, exhaustive detail here - http://murderboarding.blogspot.com/2013/03/where-they-know-your-name-grimm-s2e16.html - and given the conspiracy stuff we just got I STILL don't understand how Meisner is a big bad in comparison to anyone with some strategic capability. But it doesn't take a brilliant strategic mind to abandon/betray someone at a critical juncture and do serious damage, that much you're right about.

I am very, very much in love with the Rosalee arc they seem to be writing this season. I wish they seemed to be paying as close attention to the Renard/Adalind/Europe side of things.

And hey! After the most recent ep Nick ought to have at least some cred with the Council. Even if Krampus probably is giving them a massive headache right about now. Oh god but I want to see the hitpanther come back and do a lodge survey. That would be epic hilarity.Anna Hammetthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10095633218958433882noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4271373189216022547.post-53082230189633542222013-12-12T00:44:12.540-08:002013-12-12T00:44:12.540-08:00Oh and I don't know anything about the Catholi...Oh and I don't know anything about the Catholic/Protestant ratio in Portland, but the church used in the episode is actually Lutheran: http://stjamespdx.org/ (which is very not Catholic, I know this because I was raised Lutheran). I can totally see why, it's a beautiful church, and of course it had to be Catholic in the episode since who else does exorcism?Justine Thttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13080619935561422449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4271373189216022547.post-91329768297433387292013-12-09T15:02:53.773-08:002013-12-09T15:02:53.773-08:00The daughter and I couldn't stop giggling at t...The daughter and I couldn't stop giggling at the view from De Groot's window... it was supposed to be in The Hague (want to know the full name of the city? oh well, you get it anyway: 's Gravenhage. Try to pronounce that...) but you cannot see scenery like that within 200 kilometers of The Hague (you know, The Netherlands is flat, as in, really, really flat - not to mention the architecture) - try Belgium, or Germany - hubbie suggested Prague! (Hey, that actually rhymes!) Oh well, it's all Europe, isn't it... ;)

Anyway, I also really liked this episode! Nick did some of his best work in the whole of Grimm, and it was about time we saw Renard in action again. Hoping for a lot more of that!Justine Thttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13080619935561422449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4271373189216022547.post-35785066205215797222013-12-08T09:19:56.513-08:002013-12-08T09:19:56.513-08:00That passport... Does that say that Renard's b...That passport... Does that say that Renard's birthplace is Oregon? I'm not hallucinating that, right? So when he and his mom got to the States they must have gotten him a new birth certificate. Which makes sense because I've been wondering why no one on the show (that isn't part of his family) seems to figure he's got a European connection.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03707773323662476826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4271373189216022547.post-3196122933580041842013-12-07T21:27:07.885-08:002013-12-07T21:27:07.885-08:00Actually, I think that Nick was being such a bad c...Actually, I think that Nick was being such a bad cop in S2 was because of Juliette's selective amnesia (that subplot was awful). His head was probably perpetually occupied with depressing thoughts of how Juliette doesn't remember him and only him. Now that he's on somewhat better(?) terms with Renard, or at least keeping an eye out for any suspicious behaviour (since he's part Royal and what not)... Nick may be unconsciously learning from his captain... or at least that's what I delude myself into believing. Plus, Juliette has been fully initiated into Team Grimm - makes Nick a happier and all round nicer guy.

Actually, I kinda assumed that the writers are so totally going to emphasise on the good cop thing after they did the Nick/ Renard scene in S03E03 about him killing Wesen left and right.

I thought awhile back Sebastian was telling Renard how he doesn't like working with Meisner as his goals are only to strengthen his own position? It was the scene where the some french guy form the Verrat was sent to bomb the cafe they were in. I guess I would expect Meisner to backstab Renard & Co. at some point down the season, or maybe abandon them in the middle of some dire situation to save his own ass.

I loved the scene about Rosalee fearing of her and Monroe's lives- wanting to report Daniel to the Wesen Council and how Monroe is so totally on Nick's side but doesn't hang Rosalee out to dry. It seemed like her right reaction given that she grew up around the Resistance/Wesen Council- she was probably ingrained with all the rules and regulations plus the fear of punishment instilled in her such that she knows no other way. Also, I think its awesome how Monroe agrees with and trusts Nick to handle things even though he is fully aware of the Wesen laws.

I do hope that the Wesen Council monitors Nick and thereafter find him to be the nice and friendly Grimm he tries to be. Maybe they should interview the Eisbiber, do a Lodge Survey or something - Nick did help them stand up to the Hassilich and saved Bud from that sea cucumber Wesen.
Chips03https://www.blogger.com/profile/01625913828048417612noreply@blogger.com
