Better The Devil You Know: Haven Profiles (Dwight, Vince, Dave)

Note: File numbers redacted for security purposes.

Date: 9/21/2012
Subject Name: Dwight Hendrickson
DOB: 10/30/73
Gender: Male
Age: 38
Place of Examination: Data compiled at Chandler/Hammett Investigations offices
Occupation: Cleaner. Renditions. Updated 10/20/13:
Police Chief, Haven PD, for approximately six months.
Marital Status: Single
Race: Troubled
Classification: WR-####

Presents with: Flattened affect and heightened startle reflex consistent with time spent in combat, with a degree of control consistent with the amount of time since last deployment. Wary of others, but not unfriendly. Potential for PTSD is moderate, though due to the subject's known military training it is likely that he has substantial coping mechanisms for same. Highly competent in his chosen field(s).
Updated 1/28/13: Subject is known to have been a Ranger, though for what of the several military definitions is at this time unknown. Regardless of the specifics, we may generalize this to assume a greater than usual level of survival skills, along with a near-infinite capacity to learn and assimilate new data rapidly. This appears to come at the cost of subject's social skills; subject has few to no friends and has difficulty relating to those he deems civilians, which category includes almost everyone in Haven. Notable and probable exceptions are subjects TD-BD-#### and IN-####, though not subject TL-BD-####, who he treats more in keeping with a family member of a soldier. Subject has been seen to have significant interaction with both Teagues brothers, however, and we may safely assume that he views himself as alternately working for or working alongside them to contain the Troubles. When subject does attempt to relate to others, our sole data point thus far indicates that he reveals a source of trauma when given the opportunity to do so; this suggests that he wants people to commiserate with and quite probably misses the camaraderie of the military, but has no clear path to acquiring such connections. Subject does not engage in small talk and conversational pleasantries, thus forming connections is more difficult and awkward for him. He was unaware of subject TD-BD-####'s relationship to the Guard but also unsurprised by it, indicating an ability to comprehend patterns of data though preferring to wait for confirmation before taking direct action. Updated 10/20/13: Subject's affect continues flattened, though notably less so now that he has been placed in a position of trusted authority and allowed greater latitude to assist all parties, civilian and otherwise, in resolving the aftermath of Troubled outbreaks. As with many individuals who have engaged in combat zones and at best incompletely reintegrated into civilian society, subject appears to be at his most functional when in a position most similar to the originating trauma.

Observations: Due to the lack of available data, a full profile cannot be completed at this time; however, a number of extrapolations may be made from current evidence. The subject displays traits and reactions characteristic of either of two significant possibilities for his childhood: either a highly stable and organized family life, or a highly unstable and chaotic one, leading him to seek order in external organizations such as school and, later, the military. Given the subject's affect when discussing his father and absolute lack of information regarding his mother, the latter seems likelier until further data is acquired.

Regardless of the impetus, the subject enlisted for military service until his Trouble was activated during a tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2001. Based on age, this would indicate that subject was likely in the military for some several years prior to his Trouble's activation, which presumably took place at the same time as the reoccurrence of Nathan Wuornos' Trouble (see file PT-TR-####). It is unclear if subject attended college or worked for a period of time prior to entering the military, or if he did so immediately out of school, either high school or college. (If the latter, an investigation into why would be appropriate, given that barring military academy it is quite rare for a college graduate to choose a military path.) Following the subject's discharge and recruitment by the Guard, he returned home to Haven.

Leadership experience within the military likely contributes to the subject's ability to achieve rendition on the incidents within Haven. Subject has been observed to manufacture plausible if unlikely sequences of events which are then pressed upon the witnesses to the incidents until the witnesses are so contaminated they themselves are uncertain of the factual sequence of events. Military experience does not account for the rapidity and completeness of said renditions, although that might be explained both by inborn talent and by adaptive reflexes more finely developed while on his deployment(s) in Afghanistan, if not before. Assuming these qualities have always been in evidence they may have been what prompted the Chief to apply him to the problem of keeping the populace of Haven calm and docile.
Updated 1/28/13: Ranger experience, however, does account for the rapidity and completeness of subject's renditions work, along with whatever talents and reflexes were developed in the field. We may assume that subject elected to join the Guard due to its strong hierarchical structure on the belief that they would provide him with a by-now necessary framework for his life. It is notable, given subject's apparent preference for high-structure environments, that he was able to recognize the unacceptable nature of the Guard's practices and act on a decision to leave them. This was likely a difficult decision to reach, though the death of his daughter presumably solidified that choice. This speaks to subject's mental flexibility despite whatever preferences he possesses due to extensive training; this is probably an innate ability to make a cost-benefit analysis and act on it, which some aspects of his military training would have intensified. At this time subject's loyalties remain unclear, though the possibility that he acts more on ideals and beliefs than on loyalties is becoming a strong contender for subject's dominant worldview. Subject would clearly like an end to the Troubles, but just as clearly will not ask others to sacrifice themselves nor impose his will upon others to achieve such, even by tacit means of emotional manipulation. This strongly indicates that though he may believe that the good of the many outweighs the needs of the individual, he is unwilling to force that belief on others. This is probably heavily influenced by subject's time with the Guard and may stem from his tour of duty in Afghanistan. Further data is needed to make an adequate assessment, but at this time we consider it likely that subject will act in the interests of whatever he believes to be best, regardless of any other subject's input. Updated 10/20/13: Upon the disappearance of subjects IN-#### and ST-BD-####, and the subsequent non-functionality of subject PT-TR-####, subject took authority upon himself and/or was encouraged to do so by subjects TD-BD-#### and TL-BD-####. Subject also participated in a months-long investigative effort to assess methods of permanently ending the Troubles, and claims that they (himself and the Teagues) did not acquire data that other locals were unaware of, that the only stated way to end the Troubles cycles is for subject IN-#### to kill a person she loves. Speculation about the accuracy of that assessment is beyond the scope of this profile; however, we do doubt that subject has all relevant and necessary data to confirm this conclusion. Subject has shown himself an excellent leader as well as lone operative, as expected based on prior military experience. He has furthermore indicated a greater willingness to work with, in particular, subject TD-BD-#### given his antagonistic past with the Guard, which Vince Teagues supposedly controls. (See additional information on said subject for an analysis of how much of that control remains.) In addition, subject's power dynamics with both Teagues have shifted dramatically; where prior to his tenure as police chief subject's attitude was that of a disgruntled former employee, subject has been seen twice to give the Teagues an order and was obeyed instantly. Though said order consisted of little more than a desire for them to cease bickering, few others have been capable of withstanding the combined Teagues force of personality to such a degree; in fact, subject IN-#### may be the only other such. Additionally, in recent interactions with subject TR-BD-####, subject showed himself to be more tolerant of her behavioral disorganization and hostility than other subjects, indicating once again some degree of prior familiarity which, for whatever reason, predisposed him to allow her greater latitude. Subject was out of town during the most recent events regarding McKee; his reaction to the news of her death at the hands of Wade Crocker will give us greater information about their past relationship. Such reactions will also allow an assessment for how much the subject has relaxed his defensiveness toward subject ST-BD-####. Overall, however, subject appears to have greatly stabilized in being given a long-term position of authority from which to assist others and work with other competent individuals in the service of a greater good.

History (Clinical): Subject attempted to obfuscate and evade when confronted with a request for a conference, then attempted to resort to intimidation. When that failed as well, subject refused point blank to submit to evaluation or come in for a conference.
History (Family): Subject has one known child, female, deceased. Child was killed in an altercation with the Guard due to subject's intention to leave the group, see file ####; the bloodline Trouble activated with the daughter while her father was confronting two armed men. Previous marital status unconfirmed. Father possibly deceased; subject speaks of him as though he were dead, though a permanent and irrevocable rift cannot be discounted as subject's father refused to disclose the family history of Troubles prior to subject leaving for a war zone. Mother's whereabouts unknown. No known siblings.
History (Medical): Three confirmed GSWs in Afghanistan: one left shoulder, one right shoulder, one upper left abdomen. Additional GSWs suspected due to the nature of subject's Trouble.
Recommended Action: Turn over to Sam for observation. Monitor subject carefully until affiliations known and understood. Updated 11/7/12:
Shift to Thomas, continue monitoring with special attention to affiliations with subjects TD-BD-#### and TL-BD-####. Coordinate efforts and data with Eve and the teams on the Teagues until further notice.
Recommended Action 1/28/13: Remains as-is.

Subject Name: Vincent Teagues
DOB:
unknown
Gender: Male
Age:
mid-70s at youngest
Place of Examination: Data compiled at Chandler/Hammett Investigations offices
Occupation: Artist/editor, Haven Herald.
Marital Status: Single
Race:
Troubled, details unknown; speculated that said Trouble is a genius locus ability based on casual commentary of an uncontextual and indicative nature
Classification: TD-BD-####, see file TL-BD-####

Presents with: Obfuscating obliviousness, falsified affect. Subject displayed a qualified distrust of new person-to-person encounters outside of established social protocols, possibly justified given the factional history. Updated 11/7/12: Owns at rough estimate half of Haven's commer
cial/industrial properties through a series of shell companies and offshore accounts. Has contacts either within Boston PD or a federal agency such that he could obtain records on subject NA-#### quickly and quietly. Has reason to believe nobody should know more about subject XX-#### than himself and subject TL-BD-####, as evidenced by their distress over the break-in at the Herald several weeks ago and the lack of security on the items taken. Appears to have reason to believe that subject TL-BD-#### has motive for the abduction of IN-#### designation Audrey Parker, though what this reason is remains unclear.

Updated 1/30/13: Subject has been confirmed as the leader of the Guard. We presume that this, along with the (potentially increased) acquisition of business prospects within Haven, was done in reaction to subject's emotional trauma when subject IN-#### designation Sarah Vernon left Haven. (Note: This incident also demonstrated subject's skills with demolitions, though we do not know for certain the source of this knowledge. We continue to speculate in the direction of past military experience, but lack any data confirming such at present.) Further ossification of subject's beliefs would have likely occurred with IN-####'s return to Haven as Lucy Ripley and no memories of her prior life. This seems to be subject's primary source of contention with his brother, though we sincerely doubt it is the sole one based on the strength and violence of their interactions in recent days. It may be that the brothers did indeed quarrel over IN-####'s affections at some point in the past 50-odd years. Regardless, subject has been observed to limit his brother's movements to the point of binding and locking him in a trunk in an attempt to prevent his interference with events at Kick 'Em Jenny Neck. Subject's strong preference for the status quo to the point of initiating violent cultlike behavior is not so much more extreme than expected as less well-planned and executed than expected. As with at least one other subject (see file SR-BD-####), we see a case of long term planning followed by inadequate execution or conviction of subject's stated beliefs when the moment of decision arrives.

Updated 10/21/13: Subject appears to be devolving at a slow but progressive rate. Indicators observed include less than immediate obedience from Guard members, lack of falsified affect which is inconsistently used to manipulate others indicating a failure of subject's typical assumed affect, lack of control of outward presentation leading to facial displays of subject's hostility and instability. Subject also displays greater or more open attachment to subject IN-####, which may be a result of practicality as well as devolution given that subject IN-#### is demonstrably valuable to the safety and well-being of Haven and its residents. Subject also seems to be displaying a greater willingness to share information; now might be the optimal time to approach and question.

Observations: Given the scarcity of reliable data it is difficult to make an extensive profile, however, one can be constructed based on observational recent data. Subject has been observed multiple times in falsified affect, primarily in the course of assuming ignorance and a jovial manner. Micro-expressions counterindicate both of these states but give no replacement, leaving open the possibility of a sociopathic personality but more likely indicating that what cannot be masked has been neutralized instead. Attention to detail and control indicates some training; insufficient data to determine even a broad source. There is little evidence for leadership experience, which would counterindicate advanced military background. Subject prefers offering certitudes without substantiation as to cause or origin rather than more detailed explanations, indicating the possibility of verisimilitudinous falsification. Physical proof is provided as required, but only at a bare minimum and not to Chandler/Hammett quality forensic standards.

Despite the appearance of positive relationships with members of his putative trust circle, subject displays few actionable evidences of either trust or emotional connection. Subject has displayed hostility towards his brother in the past, ostensibly due to the perception of misguided actions and poor judgment which in both cases conflicted with the subject's own inclinations. Insufficient data as yet to determine whether this is a result of a non-dominating narcissistic tendency or whether the cause of the hostility is other than it appears. Coherent and substantiated positive relationships have yet to be determined, though subject appears to have formed a recent alliance with Subject WR-####. Whether that alliance is willing on both sides is unclear, as are any mutual goals.

Updated 1/30/13: While we have gained additional data, much of it is in the nature of confirmation. However, we may speculate some extrapolations based on both confirmation and expansion of our knowledge base. Based on subject's rate of aging, he is not immortal and the Sarah Vernon cycle of the Troubles would have been his and his brother's first that they were fully cognizant for. (Putative ages of the brothers Teagues in 1955 is unknown given their current well-preserved appearance, though for the sake of argument we suspect they were nearly of an age with subject IN-####.) With the factional history of that time which was focused on the Crocker bloodline, we may speculate a high probability of violent and malicious behavior coinciding with this time period, not dissimilar to Edmund Driscoll and his followers some months ago though more military in nature. This may well have led subject to conceive of the Troubles as a warlike state which must be prepared for in similar ways, and may go some way to explaining why he felt establishing the Guard was needful.

The subject has been observed to have a Guard tattoo of unusual variety, which is rarely seen and seems to be under subject's control as far as its visibility goes. We have seen similar occur only once before, with Julia Carr, leading us to consider a bloodline relationship ranging from (grand)daughter to (grand)niece. Further investigation into the relationship between Eleanor Carr and both Teagues, prior to the former's death, is warranted. Additionally, given the lengthy history of the tattoo within Haven, we may put forth two strong probabilities regarding its relationship to the Guard. The first is that the Guard existed prior to the subject acquiring control of its mission and had a somewhat different mandate before this event took place. The second is that the subject did indeed create the Guard, and used his family's oral tradition surrounding the tattoo to induce Guard members to take it on as a symbol of their mission. Without further data we cannot commit to either of these probabilities, though at this time we suspect the latter is the stronger.

Despite subject's purported beliefs, we must note that we believe he is still in love with subject IN-#### regardless of her incarnation, and may be incapable of discerning any differences between the three incarnations he has met due to the as-yet undetermined depth of his fixation. If IN-#### returns from the barn and comes to understand this consciously, the power dynamics in their relationship are likely to change; we will be monitoring the situation closely.

Updated 10/21/13: With the disappearance of subject IN-####, the interruption of the standard cycle of Haven and the escalating chaos resultant, we have had an opportunity to observe more unguarded reactions from the subject leading to the confirmation of some theories as well as the refinement or contradiction of others. The increasing tenuousness in his leadership of the Guard reinforces the theory that he has no prior leadership experience and had assumed command based on founding authority and via force of personality alone. In the ensuing crisis due to unprecedented circumstances, however, subject is rapidly losing control over himself and thus over the people he reportedly commands. Contrast with subject WR-#### whose leadership ability has increased as a result of being in a position of authority over emergency response forces. Perhaps out of awareness of this fact he has been observed to publicly defer to subject WR-#### on security and logistical matters.

Pursuant to erosion of control, subject has also been observed seeking and receiving comfort from his brother in what appears to be a genuine and reciprocal emotional exchange. This is the first substantive evidence we have seen of a positive relationship with a member of his trust circle, and is a positive indication that he is more capable of positive emotion and, perhaps, constructive action than previously supposed. More typical use of vulnerability and emotional distress has also been observed in the company of subject TR-BD-####, wherein additional data was recorded and information was offered to her in exchange for her emotional and logistical cooperation, albeit without her specific consent to said exchange. In this case the information used to trigger an emotional response in subject TR-BD-#### related also to a) subject TD-BD-#### and his status now confirmed to be Troubled, b) the Crocker bloodline and its previous iteration during a time of Troubles, c) another as yet unidentified bloodline suspected to be the Carr bloodline due to the connection of the tattoo. The specific instance described involved the subject applying to Simon Crocker to remove the Trouble from his wife's bloodline without her knowledge and using his own blood to activate the Crocker Trouble in his alleged friend, thereby committing at least one if not two betrayals of an intimate relationship as well as setting Simon Crocker on a destructive path of loss of self control and homicidal addictive urges. Subject appears to be aware of at least those consequences of his actions, the loss of trust resulting in his divorce and the activation of the Crocker Trouble resulting in the eventual retirement of Simon Crocker by himself and subject IN-#### incarnation Lucy Ripley. His actions in more recent days however indicate that he has not adequately internalized the predictable consequences of manipulation of others and lack of communication, as he continues to withhold information and prioritize its distribution based on a set of criteria known only to himself. Personal commentary aside, this may indicate that the subject will provide more personal information along what lines he may be directed if he believes it advantages him in some way, and should be approached with that in mind.

History (Clinical): Subject refuses appointments with Dr. Spillane.
History (Family): Brother,
older; see file TL-BD-####. Parents presumed deceased. No other known biological family; allowing for interference, biological family as yet unconfirmed. May have been romantically involved with the Sarah incarnation. No confirmed romantic partners, present or past. Possible relation to subject XX-#### (Cogan), though that remains speculation at this time. Updated 1/30/13: May be related in some way to Julia Carr and possibly Eleanor Carr. Details unknown.
History (Medical): Unknown. Recent nosebleed presumably due to the Troubled person in the past week, rather than anything medically problematic.

Age:
mid-to-late 70s at youngest

Occupation: Photographer/editor, Haven Herald.
Marital Status: Single
Race:

Presents with: Overstated enthusiasm, a tendency to appear trusting of others in contrast to his brother while not providing any information. Obfuscates with eagerness to help. Other actions indicate an underlying obsessive personality.
Updated 11/7/12: Owns at rough estimate half of Haven's commercial/industrial properties through a series of shell companies and offshore accounts. Has reason to believe nobody should know more about subject XX-#### than himself and subject TD-BD-####, as evidenced by their distress over the break-in at the Herald several weeks ago and the lack of security on the items taken.

Updated 1/30/13: Subject appears convinced to the point of fanaticism that there is a way to end the Troubles while not sending IN-#### into the barn. When confronted with the possibility of an alternate solution, subject responded immediately and violently toward his brother, who he believed would refuse any and all such knowledge. While we presume that subject SR-BD-#### gave the subject such information as she was aware of, we also suspect that said information was skewed and may have specified James Cogan as the target rather than any person IN-#### loves. Since subject never saw XX-#### outside of the barn and may believe him still dead, such skewed data would have prevented subject from being able to construct a useful plan. Alternately, if subject received the solution in similar format to which AG-#### explained it to IN-####, he may have decided that it was an unacceptable solution and that there must be a third solution. Without knowing the specifics of subject's conversation with Arla Cogan, we cannot pinpoint his motivations for keeping silent about his knowledge beyond his habitual reticence. We can, however, note that his obsession with preventing IN-####'s departure led him to release a known serial killer despite knowing that IN-####, among others, was looking for her.

Updated 10/22/13: Subject displays no significant increase in general instability due to the unprecedented circumstances following the collapse of the artifact known as the Barn, although there have been specific instances of agitation regarding the extra- or inter-dimensional portal. (Consult with Sam regarding file CRS-01 for further information on this phenomenon.) Subject displayed non-specific agitation triggers and refused to elaborate on what precisely he expected to result, therefore no determination can be made at this time as to whether his agitation is founded in rational estimation of threat or not. It should be noted, however, that TD-BD-#### may be considered to share all information sources the subject has access to, and displayed decreasing stability but no specifically-triggered agitation, indicating that the subject's expected threat may be misguided but not entirely inaccurate. Subject WR-#### may be considered to have relevant data regarding said portal; however, he has not been present as yet at the time of subject's agitation regarding same. When such data presents itself, subject WR-#### may be considered a superior baseline for determining the nature and gravity of the situation presented.
Observations: Subject displays signs of tendencies to zealotry or other forms of personality-based obsessive behavior, but motivations and ideals as well are yet unknown. At the time of this profile construction the most likely
target of said obsessive behavior is subject IN-####, though in what capacity is yet to be determined.  Any directing external force which may be acting upon his fixations is also unknown apart from subject's brother, who was acting as an opposite force until the recent abduction of Audrey Parker, at which time they agreed to a cessation of hostilities. Until recently any other external connections were likewise unknown, although certain behaviors have been observed to be pursuant to the furtherance of goals relating to subject ST-BD-####, though said goals do not appear to be necessarily the same as the secondary subject's. Herein the significant factor is that subject ST-BD-#### does not appear to be cognizant of the intended and imposed goals of secondary designation (see file ST-BD-####), whereas subject TL-BD-#### believes he has a clear understanding of them. This behavior supports the theory of his individual paradigm fixation and obsessive personality, as he displays a non-overt possibly subconscious disregard for the paradigms of others.

Despite this disregard, subject appears to remain largely inactive unless outside pressures are existent, at which point said paradigm fixations come into play. Subject displays at least partial signs of compulsive behavior, becoming agitated when routines local to the Haven area are not followed, even though routines local to the area deviate strongly from normal human routines.

Updated 1/30/13: Subject's fanaticism has developed to the point of dangerously obsessive behavior, with, as speculated, IN-#### as the focus. Though we consider it likely that subject harbors romantic feelings for her, or did at one time, his current behavior is far more in line with religious mania. He may well see IN-#### as a messianic figure who must be prevented from leaving Haven, and that if he can find the correct - worthy - solution, he will be rewarded with her presence and possibly some form of status. He may also see his feelings towards subject IN-#### as more beneficial or laudable than his brother's, holding her in the messianic status while subject TD-BD-#### appears to harbor more personal romantic feelings for IN-####. We have no further information regarding his goals with respect to subject ST-BD-####, though we are monitoring the situation closely. If subject learns of ST-BD-####'s last-ditch attempt to rescue IN-#### from the barn, a range of responses is likely, from jealousy to pride; this will of course depend on if and how the various subjects currently within the barn return from it. Despite subject's reluctance to act, we must now note that when he does so, he acts swiftly and with little forethought; this is likely to cause additional direct conflict at a minimum with his brother but also with anyone attempting to contain and/or end the Troubles.

Updated 10/22/13: Subject displays stable and rational behavior in the face of escalating chaos, including providing emotional support to subject TD-BD-#### who he had previously assaulted or been assaulted by several times. Subject also displays ability to collaborate with others in a long-term research project under duress, with minimal interference or agitation. As these others involve only persons previously established to be within the subject's trust circle, however, it is difficult to determine whether or not the current crisis has led to an increased willingness to share information. Subject exhibits continued tendency to monofocus, though manifestations of his obsessive behavior remain diminished.

History (Clinical): Subject has missed repeated appointments with Dr. Spillane.
History (Family): Brother, younger; see file TD-BD-####. Parents presumed deceased. No other known biological family; allowing for interference, biological family as yet unconfirmed. May have been romantically involved with the Sarah incarnation. No confirmed romantic partners, present or past.
History (Medical): Unknown.

Speculation 11/7/12: Though we currently lack evidence for it, the patterns at this time indicate that the Teagues may be responsible for the amnesia surrounding the events of the Colorado Kid's death and Lucy Ripley's disappearance. Since those two events were approximately six months apart, it is plausible that the amnesia extends to the entire 1983 outbreak of the Troubles. The lead theory at this time for their ability to achieve this is that they are somehow the bedrock of Haven, in a more literal Troubled sense than the metaphorical sense we have ample evidence for.
Updated 1/30/13: This speculation is probably obsolete; however, there is a non-zero possibility that some portion of it is accurate as regards the Teagues family line.
